Ramadan is the holiest time of the year for Muslims. The month-long holiday is celebrated during the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, which is based on the lunar calendar, to commemorate the revelation of the Quran. During Ramadan, Muslims abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset and prioritize spiritual growth by praying, reading the Qur’an and participating in acts of charity.

After high winds caused a tree to fall at the corner of Bauccio Commons, Facilities Services has completed a tree removal and is now repairing the damage. According to an email from Vice President for Finance and Operations Eric Barger, a large crane will occupy most of the surrounding area as repairs to Commons chimney are underway.

At approximately 4:55 a.m. on March 17, a faulty urinal part in the men’s restroom on the lower level of Franz caused flooding, resulting in minor damage to classrooms. According to an email to The Beacon from the Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management Michael McNerney, the incident was likely reported by a custodial contractor as the flood occurred outside the operating hours of Facilities Services.

On March 12, 2025, Bre Norris, a former Pilots women’s soccer goalkeeper, signed a roster relief contract with Angel City Football Club (ACFC) through June 30, 2025. Norris played for the Pilots from 2021-24 and had an extremely successful career defending the goals on Merlo Field.

Last spring, Clark Library’s Covert Gallery featured an exhibit of archival research conducted by students in collaboration with the nonprofit organization Don’t Shoot PDX. Titled the “Liberated Archives,” the exhibit focused on UP’s history with racial injustice and resistance, as well as the broader Portland community.

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Austin Rapp is a freshman on the University of Portland men’s basketball team. Rapp has made his mark on the court this year, earning six WCC Freshman of the Week awards, the 2024-25 WCC Freshman of the Year award and recording several impressive statistics to kick off his career with the Pilots. In a press conference following the Pilots’ last game of the WCC tournament, Rapp had high praise for his teammates and family when asked about his awards.

UP has been in an involvement slump since the pandemic. I have seen it at club meetings, at on-campus events and in ASUP elections. ASUP is the student government on campus, and if you are an undergraduate student, the decisions that the Senate and executive board makes directly impact you. ASUP is engaging in all sorts of things like writing a student bill of rights, passing the club budgets every semester and fighting for the university’s administration to add gender identity to its non-discrimination policy.
