The free press is under attack.
Former CNN anchor Don Lemon was arrested after covering an anti-ICE protest, CBS censored a “Late Show” interview with a democratic candidate for U.S. Senate and the FBI raided the home of a Washington Post reporter.
As censorship and legal threats escalate, members of the press continue to show up for you. Are you showing up for us?
Today is Student Press Freedom Day — a call to all in our campus community to show up for student media. This year’s theme, “Resilience in Action,” recognizes the ways in which student journalists continue to hold power to account, despite increasing intimidation from the federal government.
Just this school year, we’ve covered the impacts of the Trump Administration’s travel bans, his threat to deploy troops to Portland, and how the university, professors and students are responding to increased ICE activity.
We’ve published students' criticism of violence caused by ICE, the Trump Administration’s attacks on environmental justice and the unending excuses for gun violence.
As an independent, student-run newspaper, our responsibility is to the truth and the community we cover. We won’t bend the knee to outside influence.
So show up.
We’ll be tabling in front of Clark Library on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p. m. Stop by and help sustain press freedom by connecting with us and reading, engaging with and contributing to The Beacon.
Have something to say about this? We’re dedicated to publishing a wide variety of viewpoints, and we’d like to hear from you. Voice your opinion in The Beacon.
