As the ongoing government shutdown threatens access to November Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, food pantries around UP are gearing up to ease food insecurity.

Ali Dunham, a Care Team director and leader of campus food pantry StockUP, says the Portland community’s response to a potential SNAP shutdown has been impressive.

“I’m truly in awe of people coming together,” Dunham said. “It’s incredible.”

StockUP

The Care Team manages StockUP, a small, donations-based pantry offering free food to students in the hopes of decreasing food insecurity.

Dunham says StockUP expects to see an increase in the pantry’s use if SNAP benefits aren’t renewed. But Dunham also thinks the Care Team is prepared for the shift after a recent food drive brought in 800 pounds of food.

The pantry is located at the lower level of Orrico Hall and open by appointment or during walk-in hours: Tuesdays from 12:30-3 p.m. and Wednesdays and Fridays from 2-4 p.m.

Snacks and pantry staples are available, as well as Bon Appétit-donated meals every Tuesday, according to Dunham.

Pilots Supporting Pilots

As part of the Pilots Care program, Pilots Supporting Pilots provides one-on-one support to students facing food insecurity.

Participants receive $50 — approximately six meals — on their student ID that can be used at the Pilot House and Bauccio Commons. The program is funded by the President’s Discretionary Fund and Bon Appétit.

Students need a Care Team referral to participate.
