Nine people were injured at Ohio State University Monday morning after a man drove his vehicle onto the curb, hitting pedestrians, and then got out and began slashing students with a butcher knife, authorities said.

The suspect, who was shot and killed about a minute after the attack began by a university police officer, was an 18-year-old of Somali descent, CNN reports. His name has not been released by authorities.

The injured students were taken to local hospitals and a lockdown lifted on campus, though classes remain cancelled at OSU for the remainder of the day, OSU President Michael Drake said in a press conference following the incident.

Further information about the attack is still unfolding.

University of Portland's Department of Public Safety has resources on how to respond during an emergency situation on its website. In the case of an "emergency lockdown" or "active shooter" situation, Public Safety encourages students to follow the Run-Hide-Fight strategy.
