It has been six months since graduation and almost two years of COVID. I am still going through my stages of grief. I am blessed and privileged to have not lost anyone close nor have I financially struggled due to the pandemic. I am happy for the positives, or “Corona Upsides” as my dad calls them, like the opportunity to be a raft guide.

On Sept. 1, a new law came into effect in my home state of Texas. SB8 bans abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks. In direct violation of Roe v. Wade, this law has life-changing effects on women in Texas.

This week in Pilots athletics, women’s basketball won two of their three games, men’s basketball won both of their games, men’s soccer played in the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA championships, and women’s volleyball lost in their second to last game.

The Pilots men’s soccer team hosted the first game in the NCAA tournament at Merlo Field on Nov. 18. They beat the Seattle University Redhawks 3-2 Thursday night. They went on to play #2 Washington University on Sunday, Nov. 21 where they fell 1-3, ending their playoff journey.

The Portland men’s cross country team has qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships (NCAA). The Pilots are one of 31 qualified teams competing in the 10k race in Tallahassee, Florida on Nov. 20.
