A gunman opened fire on an outdoor music festival in Las Vegas, Nev. on Oct. 1, killing 59 and injuring more than 500 according to reports from CBS News, in what was the deadliest mass shooting by a single shooter in modern U.S. history.

A prayer vigil to honor those who are affected by the violence will be held Monday, Oct. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Christ the Teacher Chapel at the University of Portland, according to an email sent to the University community by President Fr. Mark Poorman. Read the full email below:

Dear Members of the UP Community,

You have very likely heard of the mass shooting at a concert last night in Las Vegas, where 59 people lost their lives and over 500 were injured.  This tragedy is another sad reminder of the ways that violence casts a deep shadow upon our world.

A prayer vigil for all affected will be offered this evening at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Christ the Teacher.  Father Jim Gallagher, C.S.C., Director of Campus Ministry, will preside and offer a reflection.  All are welcome.

Also, the regularly scheduled Masses tonight in Fields, Christie and Corrado Halls at 10:15 p.m. will provide time and place to mourn and pray together.

May all who have died know the peace of God’s loving embrace, and may all who have been injured in body, mind and spirit know healing and hope.

Sincerely,

Father Mark
