UP recently received a three-year federal grant for about $158,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice to reduce violence and sexual assault on on and near campus.

"Our goal is to better care for any victims and improve reporting," SAFE advocate, writer of the grant application and professor of sociology Martin Monto said. "But the most important thing we're really going to be working on is a training program to promote peer intervention to prevent sexual assault in the first place."

The program will focus on training students to recognize potentially unsafe situations and protect themselves and their friends from harm.

"This is a problem in campuses nationwide," Monto said. "We actually want (UP) to be a place where this isn't an issue at all."
