COLUMN: Grading Pilots' spring sports

The 2024-25 athletic year has been undoubtedly historic for sports at the University of Portland, and this spring season has brought more records, top performances and unforgettable moments to the Pilot community. As the spring semester winds down, Beacon sports writers Kaeden Souki and Aidan Hyde have reviewed each of the Pilots' spring sport seasons — the good, the bad… and well, actually, it’s mostly pretty good.

Pilots complete comeback against Broncos with 73-66 win

Pilots women’s basketball rallied to defeat the Santa Clara University Broncos 73-66 Feb. 22, going on a 15-4 run in the game's final five minutes. The thrilling comeback gave the Pilots their victory in the final home game of the season. Graduate student forward Alexis Mark led the way with 23 points, 11 rebounds and four assists on the night.

Pilot in the Spotlight: Laura Pellicoro stays shining

As a child growing up in Milan, Italy, graduate student and mid-distance runner Laura Pellicoro never would have expected to be where she is now, making waves in the world of track and field. In fact, her first experience with the sport at seven years old left a bad impression on her, with her first stint lasting only six months. “I absolutely hated it,” Pellicoro said. So how did Pellicoro go from hatred of the sport to becoming a five-time All-American, the first Pilot to win U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Athlete of the Week, the first Pilot named to the Bowerman Watch List and breaking her own record for fastest 1,000-meter time by a women’s collegiate runner?

Pilots push Cougars back in standings, win 84-79

Pilots women’s basketball won a close 84-79 match Feb. 15 against the Washington State University Cougars, solidifying their second-place standing and keeping the Cougars at a comfortable 3.5 games behind in the conference.  Senior guard Maisie Burnham led the game with 31 points, a season-high and career record.
