For most college students, summer break is spent catching up on some much needed rest or resume building through internships, jobs and classes. But for 23-year-old Amanda Hernandez Michalski, summers were spent living with the Congregation of St. Joseph of Carondelet to prepare for her life as a sister.

Returning students to the University of Portland hold a vivid image of the university in our hearts. Last year we chatted with our friends as we walked below ochre leaves, bare branches, torrential downpours and blooming cherry blossoms. We camped out in the library for hours as the sun rose and set, schemed in St. Mary’s and broke a sweat in Beauchamp. We experienced new friendships, personal growth and heartbreak all in the unique bubble of The Bluff.

Editor's note: It is not typically The Beacon's policy to grant anonymity to sources unless the source may face significant danger, retribution or harm from being named. We believe that in this case, publishing anonymously will bring awareness to the UP community, as well as protect the source.

Three years ago, my mom sent me a recruiting video on Facebook inviting University of Portland students to apply to work at The Beacon. At the time, I lacked a sense of belonging at UP, so I decided to apply and started working as a reporter in the fall of 2017. Then, I was hired as the news and managing editor, and finally, as the editor-in-chief for my senior year. Little would I know how much The Beacon would impact my life, and how much fulfillment I would gain from leading and working with a community of intelligent, creative and caring individuals.

Back in March, when Fr. Poorman announced that the university would be following suit alongside many other colleges and transition to online learning, I waited. I waited for the administration to extend an olive branch to students, staff and the broader UP community, and I waited for the administration to promise us that they’d taken time to look at what other universities were doing, making decisions that would be in the best interest of everyone.

When I first came to college four years ago, I immediately applied to work for The Beacon. I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a career yet, but I knew I wanted a job while at UP where I could improve my writing and make friends.

My name is Olivia Sanchez and I want to talk about the recently published article about conservative students sharing their campus experiences. I spent my last two years at the University of Portland working as The Beacon’s opinions editor and then news and managing editor. Last year I wrote about what happened at the Wally Awards. In June, I will graduate from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication with a master's degree in journalism. While I was at The Beacon, I reported on changes to DACA, the coming out experiences of LGBTQ+ students and national changes to Title IX.

Did everyone you know tell you that college would be the best time of your life? Or at least be one of the best times of your life? They said you would meet new people, live in a new city and finally start taking interesting classes. I heard all these things during my senior year of high school and well into my freshman year of college.

The truth will set us free. That is the translation of the University of Portland’s motto “Veritas vos liberabit.” Here at The Beacon, we believe in that message wholeheartedly. It is our role to seek the truth on campus and report it.
