Beloved University of Portland author and Portland Magazine Editor Brian Doyle underwent surgery for a brain tumor last Wednesday, and the Doyle family has responded asking for privacy and prayers during his recovery. Doyle was discharged from the hospital last week, in accordance with the timeline presented to him before the surgery.

“The greatest need for Brian in the coming days … is a very quiet setting and sleep,” the Doyle family said in an email sent by Fr. Ed Obermiller, special assistant to the Vice President for University Relations. “In Brian’s words, ‘I ask humbly, that you keep my amazing family and me in your prayers.’”

Doyle told The Beacon two weeks ago about his condition and that he would no longer be working at the University. The tumor, he said, is in the back right of his brain, and the surgery was in an effort to reduce its size.

A GoFundMe account was started on behalf of the Doyle family nine days ago, and has since raised more than $43,000 of its $50,000 goal. Contributors to the fund praised Doyle on the site for “brightening the world” and for his “cascades of words and images … that you shower upon us lucky readers”.

Obermiller said that community members can send cards to Brian Doyle via the University, at the following address:
