BREAKING NEWS |10 people are dead, including the shooter, and 7 are injured, according to Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin, as the result of a mass shooting this morning at Umpqua Community College near Roseburg, Oregon.
According to the New York Times, the shooter died after exchanging gunfire with the police.
The identity of the shooter and victims have not been released. According to Gov. Kate Brown, the shooter was a 20-year-old male.
UCC President Rita Cavin said the campus does not have armed security and the school maintains a no guns policy.
"I feel awful," Cavin said. "I mean to witness the families that are waiting for the students in the last bus. And to see all of the hugs and weeping and trauma that has gone on, more people were hurt than just the ones that were shot."
The college is 174 miles south of Portland. Information is trickling out slowly, but the highest priority has been placed on getting information to victims' families.
Here is a New York Times video of a 911 exchange during the shooting.
