UP students gathered Thursday night for a prayer vigil honoring those affected by the mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon earlier that day.
The story is still unfolding, but this evening's most recent statement from Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin stated that 10 people were killed and seven injured, as reported by KGW. Hanlin explained that the event is considered a mass casualty, meaning that victims will not be identified until tomorrow at the earliest.
Law enforcement officials identified the 26-year-old male shooter Thursday night. Out of respect for victims and their families, The Beacon has chosen not to name him.
"Again, I want to remind everyone that our focus tonight is on the families and the victims of today's horrific incident," Hanlin said during a press conference this evening. "I will not name the shooter. I will not give him the credit he probably sought."
President Barack Obama also spoke tonight about the incident. Visibly frustrated and angry, Obama said that America has "become numb" to mass shootings.
"America will wrap everyone who's grieving with our prayers and our love," Obama said. "It's not enough. It does not prevent this carnage from being inflicted someplace else in America."
