A returning student leader veteran, Kelsey Thomas will be coming back to the Beacon for her second year in a row as Editor-in-Chief for The Beacon. She thinks this has been a strong year for The Beacon with a well-balanced and fun staff to work with.

“I’m unbelievably proud of my staff this year,” Thomas said. “We will be losing a few seniors, but with a strong staff there are a lot of possibilities.”

Next year, Thomas plans to place more emphasis online and on multimedia to drive more traffic to the Beacon website, as well as expanding the Beacon’s social media presence. Another goal Thomas has in mind is using more alternative ways to write and present stories to engage readers.

Thomas received a Snowden internship for this summer to work at the Mail Tribune in Medford, Ore. and is looking forward to being on the bottom of the totem poll. Thomas wants to continue to focus on digital media and journalism after college.

“I feel incredibly fortunate to lead The Beacon,” Thomas said. “I think it’s important to leave the paper better than you found it.”

Ari Morris, KDUP

Next year, Ari will be KDUP’s General Manager. Morris hopes to get KDUP more involved with in the UP community, opening communications with other student media outlets, the ASUP senate and student clubs on campus.

“I hope we become the music hub on campus,” Morris said.

This past year Ari Morris worked as the music director for KDUP, kept up relations with the promoters, implemented list reviews and helped create a centralized database for staff members as well as DJs for the various KDUP shows. With this, Morris helped change their music review system, which offers more detailed information about the artists they have in their database to create a more efficient system in choosing music to play.

“I think radio is changing, with different mediums to connect with people and music,” Morris said. “I want to embrace this change, and I want to help set a standard for years to come.”

Brooke Williams, The Log

Another veteran to student media, Brooke Williams will be returning to The Log as Editor-in-Chief next year. Steadily moving up on staff, Williams has worked as a photographer on The Log, moved up to photo editor, and then finally Editor-in-Chief.

“It’s been great getting to work with different people and different concepts for the book throughout my time at The Log,” Williams said.

Williams is striving for The Log to move towards creating a more unique yearbook. Williams also hopes to increase The Log’s social media standing in the UP community as she looks forward to the next year.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time as editor working with a great staff,” Williams said.
