Deck Public Safety and Portland Police Bureau both work to keep off campus

Even if off campus, students who binge drink can face consequences.

According to Public Safety Officer Mike McNerney, Public Safety is usually contacted by a neighbor complaining about noise or an intoxicated student.

If cited by Public Safety, a student is warned or referred to the University's disciplinary process.

However, according to McNerney, sometimes neighbors go straight to Portland Police Bureau (PPB).

"There are neighbors who feel fed up with what little progress we made with a certain house," McNerney said.

Sergeant Pete Simpson, PPB Public Information Officer, said their priority is to shut down the party.

"The first step is to get people at the party to dissipate or keep the noise down," Simpson said. "But certainly MIPs are possible."

According to Simpson if a student is charged with a MIP he or she could end up with a fine or other consequence.

But if the student is compliant, officers may just issue a warning, he said.

"The big thing is an ounce of respect, cooperation and nice words go a long long ways," Simpson said.
