Residents of Haggerty and Tyson Halls recently received an email from the hall director. It was not unlike other messages that are regularly sent, reminding us of hall events and opportunities for service. Usually, I skim these emails, though I suspect many of my peers do not.

I'll sum up what I believe to be the most important announcement: Residents of Haggerty and Tyson Halls will no longer receive trash bags. Oh, and "Sorry for the inconvenience."

A riot almost ensued at the mandatory Haggerty and Tyson meeting for the 2009-2010 school year when it was announced that toilet paper would no longer be supplied. After many pleas from residents, toilet paper allocation was reinstated for one year. Now, trash bags are being taken away.

Hall directors, resident assistants and Residence Life staff are constantly trying to develop and sustain a sense of community throughout the dormitory population. So why, then, are residents of Haggerty and Tyson not receiving the same benefits as the suites in the other dorm that makes up the "Village Quad," Fields and Schoenfeldt?

We pay for the mandatory food plans, despite the fully functional kitchens that exist in each unit. We agree to abide by the "Life on the Bluff" guidelines, including the intervisitation regulation. We attend compulsory hall meetings and are under the supervision of resident assistants (a whole house of them!). So why are we losing amenities that other dormitories have?

Besides my general annoyance, I foresee a problem for Residence Life. I already avoid the creepy, putrid trash rooms in Haggerty and Tyson. Imagine how much more of a mess unbagged garbage will produce.

Most Village residents pay more than $1,000 for a month of housing and the smallest meal plan. Parking and double-as-single rooms come at an extra cost.

Residence Life, off-campus living for upperclassmen is looking more and more enticing.
