Bon Appétit is the sole food provider for many college campuses across the country, but UP's connection to the catering company is especially close.

The CEO of Bon Appétit, Fedele Bauccio, is a graduate of the University of Portland, receiving his B.A. in 1964 and his MBA in 1966. Bauccio also began his food service career as a dishwasher in The Commons, which was officially renamed Bauccio Commons after its 2010 remodel.

The dishwasher-turned-CEO has maintained strong ties with the University since his graduation. According to the 2011 UP President's Report, Bauccio is part of the New Founder's Society at UP – which includes donors who have given the University over $1 million.

Bauccio is known for his focus on sustainability. He has written opinion pieces for national media outlets such as the Huffington Post and CNN about ethical food service practices and has won several awards for his activism.

This year, along with First Lady Michelle Obama and eight others, Bauccio received the inaugural James Beard Foundation Leadership Award. The award recognizes people who help make food healthier, safer and more sustainable.

Bon Appétit is based in Palo Alto, Calif.
