UP granted $300,000 for new teaching methods in STEM classrooms

The University of Portland received a $300,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to go toward new teaching methods in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs. The grant will fund a three-year project that University of Portland faculty members will lead called “Redesigning Education for Learning through Evidence and Collaborative Teaching” (REFLECT).

Many of the contents of the time capsule were damaged upon its discovery, but among the surviving few was this 1927 copy of the Catholic Sentinel newspaper. Photo courtesy of UP Library.

Time capsule found in deconstruction of Howard Hall

The time capsule, an old metal box covered in dirt and mold, contained only few contents that weren’t destroyed or wet. Preserved items include fragments of the student newspaper at the time, The Columbia, a 1927 copy of The Sentinel, a Catholic newspaper, and a list of University of Portland students.
