You’ve probably heard me walking around campus, whether you know it or not. The heels from my boots clack on the pavement on my way to the library or within the eerily quiet halls of Buckley Center, but frankly, I don’t care anymore.

On Thursday, Nov. 11, Latinx Student Union (LSU) and Gender and Sexuality Partnership (GSP) collaborated with Diversity and Inclusion Programs (DIP) to host Our Campus, Our Canvas — a showcase of art and craftwork from UP students and faculty who identify as queer, transgender, Black, indigenous, or people of color.
Both basketball teams picked up wins at home in Chiles Center on Nov. 11. The women’s team is now undefeated and the men’s team set a new record for most points scored in a game as well as the first triple-double in program history.
This week in Pilots athletics, the men’s basketball team played three games, picking up a loss and two wins. The women’s basketball team is now undefeated with two wins. Men’s tennis competed in the Duck Invitational while the women’s tennis competed at the CSUN matador invitational. The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the NCAA West regionals. Men’s soccer left their final conference game with a win.

As the world rallies against the years of racial injustice experienced by communities of color, nearly everyone you know (and probably all of your favorite celebrities) are reposting post after post about BLM, police brutality and everything in between. Fearing being left out, you begin to repost things too. You pat yourself on the back because you did it! You acknowledged the problems in society and can now rest easy knowing that you did your part in ending the problem!
Pulitzer Prize winning author Mitchell Jackson will be speaking in the Buckley Center Auditorium as a Schoenfeldt Distinguished Writer this Wednesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. The talk is titled “Prison to the Pen: Mitchell S. Jackson’s Extraordinary Journey.”
The women’s basketball team returned to the court in all white to face the Willamette University Bearcats in their home opener on Nov. 5. The court was filled with chants from the Pilot cheer team showing up to support the team.
On Friday, Nov. 5, University of Portland students, faculty and admin welcomed Lindsay Romasanta as the keynote speaker to kick off National First Generation celebration week. This is the fifth year UP will celebrate and recognize first-generation students, faculty and staff.
This week in Pilots Athletics, men’s and women’s basketball both won their season openers, the women’s soccer team finished out their regular season play with a loss and a win, men’s soccer also picked up a win and a loss, women’s indoor volleyball lost both of their games, women’s tennis competed in the Gonzaga Invitational and women’s rowing competed in the Head of the Lake Regatta.
With the sudden onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of students across the globe were forced to abandon their dorm rooms, switch up their classrooms for Zoom screens and press pause on their traditional college experience.
