My name is Olivia Sanchez, and I am a senior at the University of Portland. I have been a student-athlete on The Bluff for three years, and in less than three weeks, I will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Last night, Sunday, April 15, I had the most disturbing experience of my time here during the Athletic Department’s fifth annual Wally Awards.
Time for round three of our WCC Mascot Extravaganza! In the semifinals for the prestigious tourney, BYU's Cosmo the Cougar faces off with Pepperdine's Willie the Wave to see who will battle Wally for the honor of best mascot in the West Coast Conference. Who will come out on top? Only you can decide!

What are the factors that make a winning team? The point guard in basketball or the quarterback in football? The roster? The funding? The coach? There’s one factor that is undeniably underrated: the mascot. The mascot is more than a fuzzy lion or fierce-looking warrior with some slick dance moves. The mascot is an essential piece of the puzzle that provides an electric atmosphere that can lead to better play of your team and mistakes for the opposition. The West Coast Conference (WCC) has some interesting mascots, but the question remains, who reigns king of the mascots in the WCC?
