Ailing Zhen and Maricar Mendez won the Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) first-year senate seats by tight margins, according to election results provided to The Beacon by Paris Tran, ASUP vice president.
The voting period, which ran from Sept. 16 to 17, saw five candidates contend for the two available seats.
Zhen took her seat with 24% of the vote, while Mendez won with 23.6%.
Adrian Benedict Bandril and Monet Simpson followed with 22.4% and Victoria Ceron-Mendoza with 6.8%.
Two write-in candidates accounted for the other 0.8%.
125 first-years voted in the election with a turnout rate of 15.32%, handedly meeting the 10% turnout rate necessary for a valid election.
