A goal in minute 15 from the University of San Diego's Caitlyn Kretzchmar proved to be too much for the Pilots to overcome. Portland fell 1-0 to USD in the WCC opener on Merlo last night.

In the first couple of minutes of the game, the Pilots put pressure on the Toreros by moving quickly and passing smart. Even with the Pilots’ skill and aggression, the Toreros steadily guarded their goal throughout the first half, making it difficult for the Pilots to pass through the defense.

Kretzschmar broke the tied score in minute 15 with an assist from Julia Sherwood to put USD up 1-0.

The Pilots were able to keep the ball in their possession and on the Toreros' side of the field but could not find the back of the net.

Toreros’ goalkeeper, Michelle Craft, saved some of senior Noelle La Prevotte’s toughest shots and was able to stop Cecilia Pederson’s attempt on goal.

Stemming from Allison Wetherington’s 9th corner kick of the night, the Pilots applied more pressure and brought the ball closer to the Toreros’ net. Even with more touches on ball and more shots, the Pilots could not find get a successful shot off.

The Pilots will face BYU at home this Saturday at 7 p.m. in their second conference game. Olga Gomez is a Sports Reporter for The Beacon. She can be reached at gomezo18@up.edu or on Twitter @olgaagomezz.
