Today's senior wisdom features Nolan Ripple who imparts some serious truth on valuing sleep as you age and that learning to study efficiently is the best thing you can do for yourself.

Name: Nolan Ripple Hometown: Peoria, Arizona Major: Biology

What is your UP claim to fame? My claim to fame is being the soul-less ginger who has to apply sunscreen even in the cloudiest of conditions. I own it though, despite what the haters may have to say.

When I was a freshman….

I did not value sleep in the way I do now. My roommate, (shout-out to Connor Rose) and I used to always be the last ones to bed on our floor, and the first ones awake in the morning. We did nap a lot to compensate, but it was brutal. This year, I need my REM’s, otherwise I don’t function.

Best piece of advice you received from someone during your time here? Anything and everything that Alex Hermanny had to say. He advised me to get involved, and contribute to the UP community at large.  At the same time, he helped me develop a strong school-work balance, and how to be busy while also making time for leisure.

What are three pieces of wisdom you learned during your time at UPortland that you want to impart to those coming next?

  1. Learn how to study efficiently—that way you don’t waste your time studying longer than you should have to.
  1. Find activities, clubs, or extracurriculars that interest you.
  2. HAVE FUN!
The Commons or The Cove? The Cove. The wraps are a classic go-to.

Best advice for experiencing Portland? Get out, and find people who want to see things with you! There are so many opportunities: the music scene, food carts, hiking/climbing, touristy attractions and coffee shops. If you have a car, use it. If you don’t, find someone who does or use public transit.

The infamous… what’s next? For the next three years I will be attending Regis School of Physical Therapy in Denver, Colorado. There, I will learn the tools of the trade to become a Physical Therapist, and rack up lots of debt in the process.
