Martin Luther King’s words, “What affects one directly, affects all indirectly” were displayed on the screen in the Bauccio Commons in front of UP students and faculty at the candlelight vigil Wednesday evening.

The ceremony, organized by Kristina Houck and Green Dot, promoted active bystanders taking a stand and coming together as a community to make a difference in preventing sexual assault.

Green Dot-certified students opened the ceremony speaking about their experiences with Green Dot and why they chose to be certified. The ceremony ended with the lighting of candles and a blessing by Fr. Mark DeMott.

“...This light is given to you to carry to the darkest places,” DeMott said. “To carry to the places where you cannot see another candle burning. It’s to be guarded carefully so that it doesn’t go out. If you catch it going out, it is to be relit. And relit time and time again.”
