The Pilots suffered another difficult loss at home falling 79-44 to University of San Francisco on Thursday.

“The team lacked energy, mental focus and we were unable to carry over the game plan we worked on all week. I am overall very unhappy [with the performance today],” head coach Cheryl Sorenson said.

The Pilots shot 29 percent, while USF shot 55 percent. Portland also fell behind on rebounds, making only 26 to USF’s 46 rebounds.

“The team needs to work on giving consistent effort,” assistant coach Brianna Chambers said.

The Pilots were outscored from the beginning of the game, trailing 21-4 in the first eight minutes of the game. Senior Kari Luttinen lead with 13 points, followed by Senior Cassandra Brown with 9.

While no one player was able to step up and carry the team, the coaches appreciated the efforts of the younger players.

“I think some of the kids off the bench tried to play with a lot of energy, and tried to lift up the team by doing the best they could,” Sorenson said.

This sentiment of the moments of good play was echoed by Chambers.

“There were times where the freshman played very well, getting offensive rebounds, posting up strong, and getting a couple key steals,” Chambers said.

The Pilots will get a chance to redeem themselves on Feb. 7 when they take on Santa Clara at home.
