Alice Gates is a new visiting professor of social work. Gates attended Grinnell College in Iowa for her undergraduate degree, and she recently completed her doctorate in social work and sociology from the University of Michigan.
Gates worked as a labor and community organizer, and spent 12 years with immigrant communities in southeastern Michigan. She also worked in Guatemala as a human rights observer.
Gates first decided to teach because she wanted to work with and influence a younger population."I think it's a privilege to be a part of someone's life during this time. I'm excited to see what we can accomplish together," she said.
