UP President Fr. William Beauchamp, C.S.C. has appointed the three student media leaders for the 2010-2011 school year.
Beauchamp named Rosemary Peters editor-in-chief of The Beacon, and Elly Thompson as editor-in-chief of The Log. Current KDUP general manager Aaron Davis was reappointed to that same position.
Beauchamp made the appointments based on recommendations from the Presidential Advisory Committee on Student Media and its subcommittees, which are made up of faculty, UP staff and student representatives.
Peters, a sophomore engineering major from Las Vegas, Nev. started working at The Beacon as a reporter last year, and is currently the design editor.
She interned at The Las Vegas Review Journal , and was editor-in-chief of her high school newspaper.
Currently president of Shipstad Hall and a computer science lab assistant, Peters also has participated in UP intramural sports and mock trial, and has been a KDUP DJ.
Peters said she would like The Beacon to be a "community experience" for UP. Improving the Beacon's Web site is one of her top priorities.
"I want to significantly advance The Beacon's Web presence," she said. "I also want to make The Beacon a paper that students are excited about and proud to read and look at by improving both the design and the content."
Thompson, a junior from Salem, Ore, is currently design editor of The Log.
She is majoring in French and Spanish, with minors in communication studies and political science.
Thompson is a UP Peer Health Educator, a French tutor in the Writing Center and a student worker at the School of Nursing and Office of Career Services.
Thompson sees The Log as a valuable archival and nostalgic document for UP, its students and alumni.
"We're lucky to have a yearbook at UP," she said. "And as editor I want to make the most of that and ensure that the yearbook provides a diverse and thorough account of the year."
Davis, a junior, is from Clackamas, Ore. A political science major also pursuing a minor in history, Davis started working at KDUP as a DJ his freshman year.
He also served as assistant music director and program director before becoming general manager for the current academic year. Davis also runs on UP's men's cross country team.
One of Davis' goals is to make KDUP better than iTunes.
"Kids have a clear choice when they're doing their homework or just hanging out," he said. "I want them to pass over the same old music they normally listen to, and choose KDUP."
