Senior Leslie Eddy has spent the last few months watching the ever spinning, swirling, seemingly endless and entirely confusing debate on health care inflame the nation.
Like most Americans, she was concerned by what she saw and was confused by what was actually happening in the debate. However, unlike the majority of Americans, Eddy has started a Health Care Week that will take place Nov. 30th through Dec. 4th. The main goal of this week is to educate not only herself, but anyone who has an interest in the debate.
"The purpose of the Health Care Week is to incite educated conversations on campus about health care reform in two ways," Eddy said. "First, increase students' interest in the issue, and second, clarify the debate by offering unbiased, easy-to-understand information."
To meet both of these goals, Eddy joined forces with two Peer Health Educators, junior Bailey Bangerter and sophomore Lana Jesic, and seniors Greg Machado and Megan Anderson, the presidents of the College Republican and College Democrat club, respectively.
With the combined action of these entities, this health care event will include several speeches from UP faces, speeches given by both a representative from Blue Cross, Blue Sheild and a representative from The Archimedes Movement, a non-profit health care reform group. There will also be several interactive events such as a Jive n' Java night and a "Patch Adams" movie night.
Every event during the Health Care week will culminate with a conversation in which students can voice their questions and opinions. Eddy encourages all students to attend at least one of events to have their voices heard.
"We just want people to come together over something we're passionate about," Eddy said.
