Let's get into the specifics. ASUP (Associated Students of the University of Portland) wants you to be a Senator. Time is running out for you to be a senator for the 2009-2010 school year! There are 33 Senate seats.

Representatives are needed for every class (freshman to senior), school (Nursing, CAS, Engineering, Business) and Residency (both on-campus and Off-campus), as well as a representative for International students and the non-traditional students (must be 25 years or older).

Senators have the authority to determine and allocate Student Government fees of $195,000 each semester to various clubs and organizations.

These fees include how the finances of the Capital Improvements Fund will be dispersed towards various tangible improvements on campus, such as the Pilot House Patio, lighted crosswalk by the main entrance, furniture in St. Mary's and the Pilot House, as well as the flat screens in the Cove, Howard Hall and Franz basement.

In addition, Senators meet and express constituency concerns to various administrative officials on a regular basis.

Reasons to join: It's fun and is a great way to get involved on campus! If Senate is not for you, there are other ways to get involved. Join the elections committee.

Members monitor the campus for campaign violations and will need to be present for 30 minutes at the elections table in the Commons from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on the days of election, which are on Sept. 22 and 23.

Deadline for applications: Friday, September 11, 2009 by 5pm. Yes, tomorrow, so don't delay.

Applications are available online at www.pilots.up.edu/web/asup/senate or email ASUP Secretary Samantha Riofta at riofta10@up.edu.
