The University of Portland has received a $100,000 grant from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, the Office of Development announced last week. This is the third $100,000 grant from the Hearst Foundation to UP.

Each of the three grants goes toward the Hearst Scholarship Endowment Fund, a program that has provided 50 UP students with scholarships since the 1994-95 academic year. The University will invest the $100,000 and use the earned income to fund the scholarships, said Melissa Bosworth, associate director of corporations and foundations for the Office of Development.

The awards have averaged $1500 and have been given to students from all departments. The latest grant will fund seven to 11 additional scholarships, Bosworth said.

UP completed a formal application for each of the three grants after the Hearst Foundation invited the University to apply, Bosworth said.

According to the Hearst Foundation, UP was chosen because of three distinguishing criteria: a "record of deserving scholarship recipients," "high academic standards" and "prude stewardship of the fund."

Sue Shogren, assistant director of financial aid, said financial need is a key factor in determining Hearst scholarship recipients. All students who complete the FAFSA are considered for the awards. The scholarships are renewed from one year to the next until the recipient graduates.
