As the cost of higher education continues to rise, the prospect of becoming a successful artist has become less realistic for those with talent in many mediums. Many students are forced to give up on their artistic pursuits all together as they try for more economically feasible degrees. Those who are still passionate about their art often keep it as a hobby, working on it in their free time as they keep it separate from their long-term goals.

One such artist is Matt Wickham, a senior business major with an OTM focus, and potter. Wickham’s interest in his art is obvious in the detailed work of the pots and vases that he has made, but when asked what keeps him from pursuing his pottery full-time, he simply said, “The money. You can’t make very much money.”

Wickham said that his mother was very talented with pottery, and was a source of inspiration that got him interested. When asked about art in his childhood, he noted that he always particularly enjoyed the clay working. Matt also made it clear that it could never become much more than a hobby, regardless of the skill involved and the potential quality of the work.
