February is here — a month drowning in heart-shaped capitalism, sticky chocolate and predictable rom-coms. But beyond the grand gestures and candle-lit dinners, there’s another kind of love worth celebrating: the unexpected friends that listen to our woes and fumbles.
Love is in the air. Whether you like it or not, you can smell Valentine’s Day floating around the corner. Regardless of if you’ve given much thought to the holiday, giving Valentine’s Day gifts is one way to show love to your partners and friends.
For Catholic students at UP, there is no shortage of spaces for prayer — with the Chapel of Christ the Teacher and chapels in every dorm hall. However, for many non-Catholic students, the lack of prayer spaces for other religions proves to be a challenge.

Pilots women’s basketball won a 66-58 thriller Jan. 30 against the St. Mary’s College Gaels to bolster their second-place standing in the West Coast Conference (WCC). The Pilots were led in scoring by senior guard Maisie Burnham with 25 points.
Donald Trump was sworn in as President of the United States when I was 13 years old. While I didn’t know much about politics, I knew that a man who said “grab 'em by the pussy” on air probably wasn’t the best representation of me and my country. Most importantly, I saw the pain in my mother's eyes watching Trump be sworn into office.
During the spring of 2016, while on her first sabbatical, history and gender, women and sexuality studies professor and Academic Associate Dean for the College of Arts and Sciences Christin L. Hancock embarked on a research journey to explore her great-aunt Mabel Smith’s story.
During his junior year at North Carolina State University, Alvin Sturdivant struggled to find his path. After switching majors three times — from education to sports broadcasting to clinical psychology — he still felt like something was missing. It wasn’t until a candid conversation with his mentor, Dr. Anona Smith-Williams, an advisor for Black students in the college of education and psychology, that he discovered where his true passions lay.

Pilots women’s basketball entered the locker room of Chiles Center after a tough overtime loss against Oregon State University Dec. 30. It was the first loss of the season for the Pilots and the end of their historic 14-game winning streak. While disappointed with the result, Head Coach Michael Meek says that the Pilots never cease to take positives from every game.
On Jan. 8, sophomore Nicole Werner was driving to a doctor’s appointment when her mother spotted smoke ahead. At first, the pair assumed the haze was coming from a nearby factory.
Pilots men’s basketball fell to the Gonzaga University Bulldogs 105-62 on Jan. 25, falling short before the largest home crowd of the season. Junior guard Max Mackinnon, coming hot off tying a school record 43 points in the team’s last match, led the Pilots against Gonzaga with 18 points.
Update 1/26 (3:00 p.m.): Joe Cates, the director of facilities services, confirmed that the cause of the flood was a failed coupling, and more specifically a solder failing which allowed the pipe to uncouple and water to flow freely into the bathroom. The water in Villa Maria Hall was shut off at 6:14 am, according to Cates, but was restored once the urinal was isolated. Residence Life has not immediately responded to an inquiry from The Beacon.

Before the break, I wrote a Beacon opinion article informing our university about the progress made thus far in the effort to add gender identity to the nondiscrimination policy. To recap, ASUP passed a resolution formally recommending that the administration provide institutional protections by explicitly adding gender identity to the university’s anti-discrimination statement. However, after more than a year of advocacy, student leaders were not provided with clear steps forward, and there was no plan to implement this addition. In response, ASUP and GSP began organizing plans for a demonstration, as discussed in the previous article. Now, after further discussions with President Kelly, I am happy to provide an update on our progress.
