Ari Shapiro, rotating host of NPR’s “All Things Considered”, will be this year’s commencement speaker for the class of ‘23. Shapiro, along with U.S. Senator in Vermont 1975-2023, Patrick J. Leahy, will be two out of the seven to receive honorary doctorates.

The Mapuche Speaking Tour paid University of Portland a visit for a screening of a documentary by filmmaker Kelly Baur and a discussion on the Mapuche land reclamation and language revitalization movements on March 22. Mapuche activists Carolina Kürrüf Poblete and Silvia Calfuqueo Leifo were in attendance. The event was hosted by the Womxn of Color Club, the Social Justice minor program and the Ethnic Studies program.

Attending a Catholic university like UP can be scary for students who belong to the LGBTQ+ community. Oftentimes facing higher rates of discrimination from students and school policies, it is understandable why prospective queer students would want to attend a school with an inclusive and supportive community.

For many people, the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic is remembered as a time where everyday life was traded for a computer screen. Our definition of normal quickly changed as the pandemic developed, making us see the world in a completely different way than ever before.

With the 95th Academy Awards, the motion picture awards season has come to a close. The films that were nominated for Oscars represented the best-of-the-best for visual storytelling in 2022. One film recognized for its sharply comedic writing was “Glass Onion,” which was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Even though it lost the award to “Women Talking,” “Glass Onion” is still a clever and entertaining whodunit mystery that is worth your time and attention.

When Rebecca Makkai was starting her third commercial novel in a remote artist residency in Wyoming, her husband told her it was following the same plot as the movie “Titanic.” Scrapping her previous ideas and looking for a new creative direction, Makkai was evoked by the passage of time that inspired prolific authors such as F. Scott Fitzgerald that ultimately landed her in one place: 1980s Chicago in the midst of the AIDs epidemic.

We address systems of inequity incorrectly. We tackle social structures like racism and sexism as if they are not intersectional, deeply complex issues but instead independent structures with obvious solutions. Attempts to solve such obstacles may be made in vain so long as classism is misunderstood as a category of systematic oppression of equal weight alongside others rather than the root cause of all.

Student activities are a large part of life on campus at The University of Portland. From events like Rock the Bluff to individual clubs, these activities bring students together to make UP a community. This year, with the impacts of the “freshman melt,” the Associated Students of University of Portland (ASUP) may not be able to provide clubs and student activities with the financial support they typically have.

The Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) 2023-2024 elections are here following a year of various senate changes including a new speaker of the senate, a new junior senator and only one senior senator, one College of Arts and Sciences senator and one School of Education senator. The ASUP 2023-2024 elections will cover the ASUP senate and executive board positions as well as a vote on whether or not to raise the student activities fee from $130 to $150.

On Saturday, March 18, the women’s basketball team took on Oklahoma University in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Pilots who were seeded 12 lost 63-85 against the no. 5 Sooners.

The Pilots Women’s Basketball team cemented their spot on the national stage as they won the West Coast Conference (WCC) tournament and in doing so earned a spot in the NCAA tournament. While this achievement is a team effort, there is one player that has stood out throughout the season, junior, Alex Fowler.
