The Pilot’s athletic season started off strong with wins coming from all directions

Men’s Soccer

The Men’s Soccer team added their first two wins of the season. The team beat Cal Poly 5-0 Friday, Sept. 2 at home. The Pilots ended up having 26 total shots on goal while the Mustangs only had 3. #3 CJ Tibbling and #32 Michael Hatcher had their first goals as Pilots, scoring in the 59th and 85th minutes of the game. 

Currently, the team holds a 2-0-2 record, tying against Central Arkansas (2-2) on Aug. 26 and Indiana (3-3) on Aug. 30. With their first shutout of the season, this is also the first time Portland has stayed undefeated in their first four games since 2018. 

The men’s soccer team took on Seton Hall at home on Sept. 5, winning 3-1. Seton Hall racked up six yellow cards and a red card during the match. #7 Brandon Cambridge led the team with 2 goals. 

They take on UCLA at home on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. 

Women’s Soccer

The UP Women’s Soccer team has started the season off with a very strong run, winning their most recent game against the University of Nebraska - Lincoln, 2-0 on Sept. 1 in Lincoln. 

The team currently stands at a 4-0-2 record, beating UNL, 2-0 University of Montana Aug. 28, and 6-0 Eastern Washington University Aug. 21. UP tied against Washington State University at 0-0 and also with University of Utah at 2-2 at the season opener on Aug. 18. 

UP beat Hawaii University 1-0 on Sept. 4, #9 Cally Togiai scored the team’s only goal in the 86th minute.

 The women’s soccer team takes on Seattle University on Sept. 8 at home.

Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team is also off to a great start to the season, with a 5-1 track record. After winning all three of their matches at the Sacramento State Invitational (3-0 Middle Tennessee State Aug. 26, 3-2 Nevada Aug. 26, and 3-1 Sacramento State Aug. 27), the Pilots went into the Denver International with great momentum. 

After losing their first game against 0-3 University of Denver on Sept. 1, the Pilots were able to pull out a win against Hofstra University (3-1), and Butler University (3-0).

The volleyball team will compete in the Oregon State Invitational with their first math at 5:00 pm on Sept. 9 against North Texas.
