It can be hard to find decent food in North Portland after dark, but whether you love food or you are in love with food, Portland is your town. We visited three local late-night hot spots of delicious food and good value. Treat yourself to a taste of Portland!

Walk:

The East Side Delicatessen

Distance from UP: 0.6 miles

Closing time:

Sun-Thu, 11:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m.

Fri-Sat, 11:00 a.m.-11:00 p.m.

Rating: 4.5/5

I had the chance to come back here for the first time since freshman year, and along with nostalgia, I got a great value for my money. A soda, some chips and a massive Italian sub cost me about $15—even the biggest appetites could be satisfied.

On top of that, the shop has a great laid-back, but clean feeling to it. The only speed bump of the experience was that my sandwich was pretty heavy on what I assume was horse radish. Overall though, it was definitely worth checking out, and a great late night stop easily within walking distance.

Bike:

El Burrito Azteca

Distance from UP: 2.2 miles

Closing time:

Sun-Th, 10:00 a.m.-12:00 a.m.

Fri-Sat, 10 a.m.-2:00 a.m.

Rating: 5/5

This is a classic Mexican food place that needs no introduction. It is a bit of a bike ride from campus, but definitely worth it. I had a plate of pork tacos and a cola, costing $8 even, making it the least expensive meal on this list and no less filling for it.

The value was great as was the quality, and the staff were very friendly and got the food out quickly. From the first taste to the last bite it was everything I wanted out of my plate of tacos and more. Good vibes, good food and a great experience on a college budget!

Ride:

The Roxy

Distance from UP: 6.3 miles

Closing time: Open 24/7

Rating: 4/5

The best quality to off-beat-feel ratio that I experienced was here, in downtown Portland. This diner has delicious food with a moderate price range. I helped myself to a gourmet burger and some tater tots which ran me about $11. They also served some of the best coffee I’ve ever had in Portland, and coming from a lifelong resident, that’s saying something.

With friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere, I had a very positive experience. Even though it’s a bit of a drive, I’d definitely go back, and I recommend it only if you have a little extra money left in your food budget.
