Anne Pitsch Santiago is a new assistant professor of political science. Santiago was previously an adjunct professor at UP and this is her first year as a full time professor.

Santiago earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from Viterbo University in Wis., obtained her master's degree in political science from the University of Nebraska and got her Ph.D. in government and politics from the University of Maryland in 2000.

Between her master's degree and doctorate, Santiago served in the Peace Corps for two years. She was stationed in Mauretania, West Africa, where she worked on agricultural innovations. "The Peace Corps was difficult, but rewarding," she said.

Later, she worked as a conflict management coordinator in Rwanda as part of a partnership between the University of Maryland and the National University of Rwanda. Santiago said that she wanted to teach because she wanted to share with others topics, such as Africa, that might not be well understood.
