It’s 2016 and I am 13 years old. I am in 7th grade at Le Lycee Francais de Los Angeles, an all-French school I attended from kindergarten to 8th grade. Going to a French school when you are a native French speaker living in a country where French is not the dominant language is a blessing. It allowed me to develop language skills I also wouldn’t have in French, while also having deeper implications I would only discover in my teenage years.

Although Native American Heritage Month has come to a close, it doesn’t mean the conversation about issues impacting Native peoples are over. Martin Scorsese’s most recent film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has garnered attention from critics as one of the best films of the year. However, it has also been controversial over its depiction of Native history. While some commend the film, others aren’t so convinced that it did justice in uplifting Native voices and the hidden history of violence against their communities. Historically, the depiction of Native people and their history has been largely inaccurate in the media. Does this film continue playing into these inaccuracies about Natives or is it a step forward for Hollywood? Board members of the Native American Alliance (NAA), Keisha DeSheuquette, Ajahrain Yellowhair and Aubrey Lee unpack “Killers of the Flower Moon” and offer their own personal insights on the film.

Imagine a room of 100 people. Now select 15 of those individuals. While you may be thinking that this visualization is a fancy way of expressing a percentage, the image paints a stark picture: That subset is representative of how many women you might expect to find in a similarly sized group of engineers, according to a 2020 global statistic by the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

The start of my time at UP ended my time dancing for over six months. In the spring of 2022 after a tedious day at Weekend on the Bluff, UP’s exploratory weekend for admitted students, I hopped off a step at a restaurant with a half-asleep foot and proceeded to roll my ankle. Twice. As wait staff anxiously hovered around me, offering ice and trying their best to avoid legal action, I thought I had simply sprained my ankle at worst and would be back at it in no time. I was seriously wrong.

First, let me tell you that being a United fan is rewarding, yet heartbreaking. Each weekend my heart races with excitement to watch the Red Devils play. Each goal we score is like a shot of serotonin and each goal we concede feels like a bullet straight through my heart. In recent years, I have been shattered by bullets.
