University president Fr. Mark Poorman announced today that he will be resigning from his position at the end of June. He has been the University’s president since 2014. Father Jim M. Lies will be serving as interim University President starting July 1.

University of Portland students who have found themselves struggling to cover costs in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to apply for the Presidential Hope Fund, a scholarship unique to UP that is accepting applications now. The fund is an ongoing scholarship opportunity that typically ranges from $100-$1,000 in individual rewards.

The University of Portland has received over $3.8 million in coronavirus relief funds, according to Interim Director of Finance Eric Barger. Approximately $1.3 million will be used for direct aid to students. Most of the remaining funds will be used to offset lost revenues incurred due to COVID-19 and to pay for other ongoing expenses such as the Carbon Health COVID-19 services, Barger said.

Most of campus including Shipstad, Mehling, Villa Maria, Corrado and Lund Family Hall as well as the off-campus UP neighborhood is still without electricity and cell service, due to a winter storm that has caused massive regional power outages. The UP area has been without power since last night.

Due to a drastic cut to the student activities fee, ASUP will be decreasing the funding given to clubs this semester. ASUP has changed the way it assigns funding to clubs and student organizations this semester. The fee was reduced by 89%, and is accompanied by a change in how funding is allocated.

Registration for the Spring Engagement Experience (SEE) Portland immersion closes on February 14. This immersion program is open to all students and faculty and will explore the history of racial injustice in the North Portland area.

Between Feb. 1-7, the University of Portland reported 0 positive test results out of 800 administered COVID-19 tests. The health precautions on campus appear to be working — a promising indicator for UP’s plan to hold primarily in-person instruction in the 2020 Fall semester.
