For National Book Award Finalist Ross Gay, a major benefit of writing is getting his mom to read his work. But after reading one essay, “Braces on Adults,” Gay’s mother felt he exaggerated a childhood memory in which she reset his teeth inside of a Dunkin’ Donuts.

StockUP was a 100% free resource for all UP students, faculty and staff where produce, toiletries and other household essentials were available for those who needed them. During my first year (fall 2021), students, faculty and staff would gather at the old social work house to grab any necessities. Since then, the StockUP pop-ups have moved to different locations and have slowly been declining. The university’s StockUP pop-up food pantry has been on hiatus since fall 2023. This past school year, there have been no pop-up food pantries on campus due to a restructuring of the program.

My Instagram feed over the past few months has revealed a probably unhealthy anxiety about my career. There was a point in mid-January where most of my suggested posts — typically graphics of eerily faceless, spiffy cartoon men clad in business casual gesturing to career advice written in boldface — were about scoring internships and winning jobs.

For as long as I can remember, people have always asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I thought I would need a college degree for every answer I supplied. I am still learning that more often than not, most jobs don’t need a college degree.
