On Wednesday, Nov. 22, the UP community was alerted of a burglary occuring in Buckley Center the day prior, Nov. 21, at approximately 4:30 p.m. Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management Michael McNerney sent an email to the student and staff body asserting that two individuals had entered Buckley Hall and stolen a bag containing belongings and credit cards of a faculty member.

Fyodor Dostoevsky was about to die. He was arrested for joining a utopian socialist group of intellectuals which resulted in him getting arrested and sent to prison. On Dec. 22, 1849, Dostoevsky was marched out to Semyonovsky Square where it was declared that he would be executed by gunfire along with fellow members of the group.

I was religious once, as a child, if you can call it that. I was taught that life is eternal, both before and after the brief moments we spend on Earth. I don’t specifically remember whether or not I was comforted by that idea. I think I was too young to ever think about death. I chose instead to focus all my attention and energy on catching bugs, playing soccer and causing as much mayhem as I could get away with — the usual childhood pursuits.

The quad near the bookstore was quiet, save for a small group lighting candles around an altar adorned with flowers and posters. Within minutes, dozens of people arrived, including students, faculty and community members. StockUP, the pop-up food pantry that aided members of the UP community that were facing food insecurity, is on pause while the Diversity & Inclusion Programs (DIP) work towards making the program more organized. The department aims to reintroduce StockUP next semester, according to Director of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Tshombé Brown.

The summer of 2023 was a great season for uncomfortable films to watch with your Japanese father. I was unsure of how he’d react to “Oppenheimer,” considering we’d only gotten back from Hiroshima the month before. I even tried watching less controversial movies with him, but he slept through Itami’s “The Funeral” and played on his iPad while I watched “Hausu.”

Mom’s minivan — many of us rode in it at some point growing up. Whether it was your own family’s minivan or that of a school friend, at some point everyone has sat in a minivan on their way to some sort of practice, rehearsal, training, etc. For those lucky few that got to take this vehicle to college, we ended up with probably the best college car in existence.

My mom sends me about twenty text messages every day. Most of them are pictures of our French bulldog, Stewart, who has now become her certified best friend while I'm away at college. Almost every morning, I can rely on getting a text from her, wishing me a great day with a bitmoji she thinks looks like her.
