Ever since I was little, I’ve found joy in making to-do lists. I always liked to make them as detailed as possible, so I had more items to cross off, which would make me feel more accomplished at the end of the day. Before I had too many responsibilities, my to-do lists would look something like this:

This week in Pilot's athletics, the men’s soccer team won a match 15-0, the rowing team won the varsity four race at the Portland Invite, and the baseball team went 2-1 in their series against St. Mary's.

In 2009, the Gender Sexuality Partnership — then known as the Gay Straight Partnership — applied and became UP’s first ever club focused on sexuality. This was a big moment for LGBTQ students at UP, particularly after multiple attempts for similar clubs were shut down by the University for conflicting with the school’s Catholic values.

Approximately 30 University of Portland students lined the sidewalk of Willamette Boulevard with signs supporting survivors of sexual assault at a demonstration at the main entrance of campus March 31. Drivers in cars honked in support as the group captured the attention of many passing by the solidarity protest.

One of the University’s utility vehicles went missing at approximately 8 a.m. on Sunday, March 28. The physical plant vehicle is a green and yellow 2018 John Deere Gator, with an estimated value of over $20,000, according to Campus Safety Director Sara Westbrook. It was taken from a shed behind Villa Maria Hall, along with two leaf blowers.

There are some things about the future that are unknown. Will flying cars be a real thing, can humans set up a colony on Mars, or will there ever be world peace? These are all possible things that may happen one day but are, for now, speculation. However, there is one thing that science is sure about: Earth’s climate is changing and the damage will be irreversible by 2030. This is why we all need to act now and it needs to start at the top. University of Portland is not only an influencer toward student behavior, but also the community that it is a part of. UP needs to set an example about being climate conscious and take much needed steps towards reducing its carbon footprint.

Last summer, sitting on her porch soaking in the sun just after finishing up her remote work for the day, Sydney Livingtson’s phone rang. She sat in shock as the voice on the other end of the phone mumbled on, until she heard the words, “Stage 2 Nodular Sclerosis Hodgkin's Lymphoma.”

Today marks the beginning of Holy Week, one of the most celebrated weeks in the Catholic liturgical calendar. For UP Campus Ministry, the ability to gather and celebrate will be especially meaningful because the arrival of COVID-19 last spring forced them to cancel their in-person masses and services.

Growing up in Hawaii, I often didn't have much choice in selecting my television programming. Most of the programs I was interested in took place during the middle of the day while I was at school or before I woke up and my family didn’t have cable television nor a DVR system. For example, Jeopardy! aired while I was driving home, and my favorite baseball team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, would play while I was learning about matrices in my Algebra 2 class. This meant I missed several events other kids across the country could have witnessed live, such as James Holzhauer’s historic winning streak or Clayton Kershaw’s famous no-hitter.

Dear UP Community,
(03/27/21 1:24am)
When the University of Portland was first established in 1901, its student body was entirely white men. In 1951, the UP opened its programs to women for the first time. Now, 70 years later, women make up 61.5% of UP’s undergraduate student body and 46.1% of undergraduate students identify as nonwhite.

There’s over 830 students currently living on campus. Multiply that number by roughly 2-3 meals a day and then multiply that number by 7 days a week. That’s over 11,600 take-out meals being served each week, and that’s on the low end of the range. Now imagine the sheer amount of garbage associated with those same 11,600 meals.

The usually-gloomy Portland days are getting longer, the skies sunnier, and spring fever is setting in. So, what does a COVID-safe spring look like? UP students need a way to let go, relax, and enjoy the sunshine after a long week of stressful midterms, but even though COVID-19 cases are beginning to drop, it’s still important to stay safe and distant. The Beacon put together this list of 10 fun outdoor things you can do in Portland while staying COVID-safe.

The decision to hold UP’s 2021 commencement virtually left many graduating students and their families disappointed. In an attempt to address this, the University will be hosting a Pre-Commencement Graduate Recognition Event outdoors on May 7.

Active Minds is holding a virtual Fresh Check Day on Friday, March 26 from 12 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event is a mental health fair which aims to foster discussion on a variety of different topics ranging from suicide prevention and yoga to mental health for QTBIPOC people. Active Minds hopes that the Fresh Check Day will be an opportunity for students to collaborate with different clubs and organizations and to freely talk about these highly stigmatized subjects.

To my fellow UP students who haven’t read “How to Be an Antiracist”, I have one question: why not? How often do you get to read a book, for free, written by one of Time Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and then have them speak to your school about it?
(03/24/21 10:14pm)
Why not?
