Will Mafnas, a civil engineering major, will be moving back to his hometown of Tamuning, Guam after graduation to apply for jobs at engineering companies Guam Power Authority and Guam Waterworks Authority as an engineer-in-training.

Mafnas interned at Guam Power Authority during the summer after his sophomore year and at Guam Waterworks Authority during the summer after his junior year. Before applying, Mafnas says he must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam to get his Engineer-in-Training Licence.

Mafnas hopes to eventually get a job in environmental protection engineering. Engineers are in high demand in Guam, he says, and Mafnas hopes to work his way up to be the chief engineer at Guam Waterworks Authority one day.

Mafnas said he recommends that young engineering majors take their classes seriously to get internships and jobs after college. Mafnas says he feels prepared by the engineering department for his engineering test and the job search ahead.

“I’m going to miss Portland,” Mafnas said. “My family is back in Guam, but I plan to come back to Portland in the future.”
