The department of Public Safety is attempting to make it easier to reach dispatch with the option to send a text message to a dispatcher at any time with non-emergency information or inquiries.

The number to text Public Safety is 971-563-4341.

The system, which runs through a mobile application, went into effect last April. Public Safety Communication and Technology Coordinator Michael McNerney said it has been effective and reliable so far.

“The reality is it doesn’t necessarily add a function that wasn’t present before,” McNerney said. “Our hope is that this adds another channel for an individual that might otherwise feel a little silly calling Public Safety. It gives them a quieter and more subtle way to reach out to us.”

McNerney said the texting option could also be useful for those with hearing impairments to communicate directly with dispatch, rather than having to call in and have a phone conversation.

The Public Safety website states that texts should only be used to send inquiries that are not emergencies, such as for questions about parking or other non-emergency situations.

For emergencies, call 911 or the Public Safety emergency number at 503-943-4444.
